Aydee’s inspiration for a series on Mexican Heroines evolved from her desire to pay tribute to the amazing accomplishments and strength of character of some of the most celebrated women in Mexico. These Heroines represent the many equally amazing Mexican women living among us today. Viva La Mujer! GUADALUPANA - Dubbed the “Queen of Mexico”, she has come to symbolize much more than the mere secondary position assigned to her by Christianity. She represents justice, pride and dignity for women and the indigenous roots of Mexico.
SOR JUANA INEZ DE LA CRUZ - 1651-1695, Recognized as the first feminist of the Americas. She was considered one of the foremost intellectuals of her day and one of the greatest women poets of Mexico.
FRIDA KAHLO - 1907-1954, Her tragic life inspired her to paint ‘not her dreams, but her reality.’ She is considered Mexico’s best-known woman painter, and her works have been declared National treasures.
ADELITA - It is unclear if there ever was a woman named Adelita who fought in the Mexican Revolution, however, the term “Coronela” and “Adelita” was a name reserved for special heroic women who fought bravely alongside their male counterparts.
